Grow as houseplant since it is frost tender. "Impatiens tinctoria comes from higher elevations in central Africa, where the climate is relatively cool. Ideally it prefers temperatures between about 50 and 80 degrees Centigrade. It can tolerate temperatures in the 80s and even above, but it might decline in consistently hot temperatures, especially if nights are warm. The plant can be brought indoors over the winter, where it may stay evergreen and continue flowering. It will need a very large pot - at least 15 gallons. If the pot is too small, the tubers may break it! It can be grown outdoors in the ground in the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands if mulched heavily and given overhead protection. It prefers filtered sunlight, or bright shade with some morning sun. Like most Impatiens, it enjoys moist, well draining soil and regular feeding. Some humidity is needed - over 40% is recommended." from Strange and Wonderful Things Available from Prime Perennials Nursery. |
