Flower Colour in Month(s). Fruit

Flowering stems 4-6 inches or more in height, topped by a whorl of 6 leaflets and an umbel of 2-4 white 6-petalled (and pink forms are known) flowers in March-June.

Comment

Clump or colony-forming, slowly spreading to 12 inches or more across. Need to be protected from competition in the root zone. Native from Eastern U.S.A. in open woods.

Plants disappear by midsummer (Summer dormant), earlier if they don't get enough moisture. Remove dead foliage and mark location of plants; even when dormant, they need to be kept moist. Tubers may rot in very wet soils like clay or alongside streams, rivers or lakes.

Grow in a woodland garden, underplanting in a shady shrub border or a rock garden. See Nursery of Perennials, Ferns and Bulbs for Shade for other plants to put in the shade.

Available from Kevock Garden Plants and Pacific Bulb Society.

Companions

Small ferns, bulbs, viola, hosta. Anemone nemerosa (but give them their own spot)

Alpine House Cultivation

A tuberous-rooted perennial from North America is an ideal pot plant, with tri-ternate glabrous ferny green leaves and an umbel of white to pink flowers on a 6 inch hairy stem. Compost B (Equal parts of loam, leafmould, peat and sand. This is a compost with a good body, which is more retentive of water but still drains well. It will grow all shade loving plants, bulbs and conifers satisfactorily) is suitable. They need

  • plenty of water during the growing season, appreciates part shade during summer,
  • then moist at other times.

Alpine House Propagation

Seed should be sown as soon as ripe using Compost 2 (Equal parts by bulk of medium heavy fibrous loam and leaf-mould. Both the loam and leaf-mould should be sterilised and then rubbed down to a fine granular texture. The particles are better if small, but should not be sieved. To this is added 2 parts of Cornish Sand, after sieving through a 1/16 inch sieve as the larger particles are not needed).

Repot only when necessary after flowering.
