Soil

Roses prefer acidic soil of pH 6.5 (sand) but will tolerate alkaline soils up to pH 7.5 (chalk). Mix 25 lts farmyard manure, or pulverized tree bark with bone meal, in soil before planting. Broadcast rose fertilizer in early Spring.

Tolerant of Poor Soils, so broadcast rose fertilizer in early summer as well.

Light Green and fern-like, but not as colourful in autumn as its parents Rosa hugonis and Rosa sericea.

Flower Colour in Season. Hips

White with yellow centre and prominent stamens, single blooms with slight fragrance.

Flowering is in the Spring only. Slightly fragrant. Ornamental hips display.

Comment

The shoots are graceful, arching and of a fawny-brown colour as are the numerous thorns.

Good for Woodland and covert planting.
