Roses prefer acidic soil of pH 6.5 (sand) but will tolerate alkaline soils up to pH 7.5 (chalk). Mix 25 lts farmyard manure, or pulverized tree bark with bone meal, in soil before planting. Broadcast rose fertilizer in early Spring. Tolerant of Poor Soils, so broadcast rose fertilizer in early summer as well. |

Comment |
The most common ancient wild rose native to Britain and Europe is a coarse untidy shrub. Their hips are rich in vitamin C and used in rose hip syrup.
