Soil

Roses prefer acidic soil of pH 6.5 (sand) but will tolerate alkaline soils up to pH 7.5 (chalk). Mix 25 lts farmyard manure, or pulverized tree bark with bone meal, in soil before planting. Broadcast rose fertilizer in early Spring.

Tolerant of Poor Soils, so broadcast rose fertilizer in early summer as well.

Slightly coarse, dark greyish-green

Flower Colour in Season. Hips

Light crimson, semi-double, quite large, highly scented and profuse in June.

Flowering is in June during the Summer only. Very fragrant. Ornamental hips display.

Comment

A showy shrub with erect yet bushy growth. In the Middle Ages its scent-retaining properties were much valued by apothecaries. After a good summer, when fully ripe, in the autumn the small, oval hips are attractive.

Good for Hedging. Good for cutting. Grow in pots.
