Soil

Roses prefer acidic soil of pH 6.5 (sand) but will tolerate alkaline soils up to pH 7.5 (chalk). Mix 25 lts farmyard manure, or pulverized tree bark with bone meal, in soil before planting. Broadcast rose fertilizer in early Spring.

Tolerant of Poor Soils, so broadcast rose fertilizer in early summer as well.

Foliage

Dark Green. As a shrub, it is vigorous and solid, but if allowed to grow too long without pruning, it loses its foliage at the base.

Flower Colour in Season. Hips

Deep Crimson flowering occurs throughout summer only. Large crop of Orange-red, flagon-shaped (with a five-pointed crown of sepals at the bottom) hips are produced each year.

Comment

Besides being a very good shrub with hips in the autumn, it can be used as a wall plant, as well as for Woodland and covert planting.
