Bird seed

aliens in Britain

by C. G. HANSON

ABSTRACT

The petfood industry imports large quantities of seed into Britain as food for cage birds. This ultimately results in the appearance of many species of plants growing in Britain as casuals on rubbish tips or waste ground and in gardens. Some 30 species of plants are regularly introduced as bird food and these together with their impurities, regularly appear as bird seed aliens. These plants originate widely from many countries around the world.

Cultivation of bird seed samples from many sources and the records of plants occurring as bird seed aliens have produced a list of 438 species of plants believed to be introduced by this agency.

The Alpine Plants of New Zealand by Graham Ross

"This site is for those interested in the cultivation and ecology of New Zealand alpine plants. I decided to make this website to introduce the fascinating plants that grow in the mountains of New Zealand especially those from the South Island.
My name is Ross and I live in Dunedin, New Zealand. Dunedin is a small city near the bottom of the East Coast of the South Island.

Im interested in most plants but what interests me most are plants growing in extreme environments. Apart from alpine plants I also grow carnivorous plants.

I have been cultivating New Zealand alpine plants for more than ten years.
In 2005 I won the Alpine Garden Society (UK) Sir William and Lady Lawrence Award for contributions to the cultivation and knowledge of alpine plants.

I will be collecting seed in Autumn 2010  (from late February). I will focus my attention on small mat forming and cushion alpine plants from the South Island of New Zealand. Especially species of  Raoulia, Haastia, Celmisia, Aciphylla, Ourisia, Chionohebe as well as many others. I have been collecting seed for 12 years now with about half of that time selling the seed internationally."

The Mountain Flora of Lakeland by D.A. Ratcliffe (The Nature Conservancy). You can download the excellent PDF to inform you about the Native Plants of The Lake Country of Cumberland, Westmoreland and Lancashire North of the Sands in England, which are suitable for their Ecological Background.

Fir Tree Farm Nursery sits in a quiet rural corner of Cornwall, England. Enjoy a wander around our beds of perennials, alpines, ferns and grasses.

We have one of the largest ranges of perennials in England - over 4000 varieties of cottage garden perennials, including many rarities suited to a temperate climate. The nursery also has a large range of clematis and climbers.

If you are ordering plants from us we can do a free planting plan for any area, large or small. If you are local to us we also provide a planting and landscaping service.
