A clump-forming perennial herb, largely restricted as a native to steep but stabilised limestone screes, usually in partial shade, but also found on andesite debris and river-cliffs in Northumberland. It is confined to sites where the soil remains moist. Alien populations occur along hedgerows, on river banks and in other places near habitation. 200-580 m (Pen-y-ghent, Mid-W. Yorks.) as native, but down to sea level as an alien.
