A deciduous shrub of calcareous woodland, often on steep, sometimes rocky, slopes with little ground cover, but rarely in deep shade. It also grows in chalk-pits, and in wet, species-rich fens. It reproduces by seed and is self-fertile. 0-335 m (Ling Gill, Ribblesdale, Mid-W. Yorks.).

An evergreen, low-growing shrub of heavy, neutral to basic soils in deciduous woodland, often in quite deep shade. It reproduces by self-layering and by seed, but as it flowers in the early spring and requires cross-pollination by flies or moths, seed-set is often poor. Lowland.
