An annual or possibly perennial herb, which was discovered growing on clay in the dry bed of a turlough in Co. Galway in 1999. In Europe it is recorded from ephemeral water bodies, particularly lakes with marked water level fluctuations, temporary pools and rutted tracks, and is most frequent as a terrestrial form on wet mud. This species occurs in mesotrophic lakes, canals and gravel-pits. It is usually annual, although some populations may perennate. 0-390 m at Drumore Loch (E. Perth). Provides forage and cover for young fish and aquatic insects. Ducks eat seeds and foliage. It does not develop surface rosettes, unlike most starworts and grows mainly near the bottom of the pond.
