Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "This is a genus of approximately nine species of erect, clump-forming, rhizomatous perennials with simple or pinnately-lobed leaves and solitary, long-stalked daisies with prominent, conical central disks. They are found in dry prairies, gravely hillsides and open woodland in central and eastern North America. The thick black roots are edible and have a pungent flavour. The dried root is said to boost the immune system and is widely sold and used as a preventative measure against colds. This species is an upright perennial with coarsely hairy, ovate or lance-shaped leaves and solitary flowerheads with slightly reflexed, light purple rays and a brown central disk. Echinacea purpurea ‘Ruby Giant’ has red-purple flowers that fade to grey-purple. The flowering stems are erect, hairy, stout and stiff but do need staking for best effect. It is free flowering, with flowerheads 10cm (4in) across with single, flat to slightly reflexed petals. Its cones can be up to 5cm (2in) tall and 4.5cm (11/2in) wide. Grow in deep, well-drained, humus-rich soil ideally in full sun although they can tolerate some shade." from Royal Horticultural Society. " ‘Ruby Giant’ is a purple coneflower cultivar that is noted for its large, bold, dark-ruby pink flowers. It is a clump-forming perennial that features 7” diameter flowers with non-drooping ruby-pink rays and large orange-brown center cones. Long summer to fall bloom period. Coarsely-toothed, dark green leaves (3-6” long). Plants typically grow on rigid stems to 24-30” tall. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter and, if flower heads are not removed, are often visited by goldfinches who perch on or just below the blackened cones to feed on the seeds." from Missouri Botanical Garden.
