Plant Name |
Monarda 'Violet Queen' "Monarda, the 'fireworks' flower" written by Fi Vickers and posted on March 13, 2013 besides telling you 'Many like to deadhead the flowers for both the sake of attractiveness and to prolong flowering on the whole plant. Whilst some suggest cutting right back to the ground straight after flowering to create the opportunity for repeat growth. However, they can flower for six weeks or more anyway. I disagree with both of these views and leave both the stems and seed heads, which haven’t succumbed to mildew, overwinter for both their visual interest and for the birds to feed upon. As they are not the best germinators, you are unlikely to find unknown seedlings the next spring.' provides more details on Monardas. "Monarda ‘Violet Queen’, the bee-balm and bergamot, commemorates Nicholas Monardes (1493-1588), physician and botanist from Seville, who published Joyfull Newes Out Of The Newe Founde Worlde (1577) about items from North America." from Royal College of Physicians |

Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "Excellent in arrangements, its jaunty whorls of Sage-like blossoms and decorative bracts attract butterflies and hummingbirds while holding our interest even in winter. Lining erect and robust stems, its opposite leaves are deliciously scented. An engaging addition to the border or a meadow setting, Bergamot offers a pleasing contrast to the more undefined forms of the garden, as well as to the linear aspect of grasses. Happiest in moist, fertile soil, Monarda’s dense clump needs to be divided every 2 to 3 years. The following cultivar exhibits excellent resistance to powdery mildew. Crowning red-tinged bracts, this Monarda’s vivid lavender-violet flowers will reign in your garden. Its downy soft, grayish green foliage makes a pleasing, fragrant base for the colorful and curved, tubular blooms." from Digging Dog Nursery. "On the rare occasion when similar research can be compared on different sites, pay close attention to what is being measured. The Chicago study shows a multi-year summary while the NC data is from one year with tables showing response at different times during the growing season. See Monarda Mildew Ratings results in the 2 Tables." from Monarda Mildew Resistance from Richard E. Bir of NC State University and Richard Hawke of Chicago Botanic Garden. Available from Shoot and Westcountry Nurseries in the UK with Digging Dog Nursery in America. Varieties of Monarda are available from Dartmoor Herb Garden, who have National Plant Collections of Monarda and Nepeta. Visitors are very welcome to come and visit the collections, but strictly by appointment only please. Occasional open days in conjunction with organisations such as Plant Heritage are planned for the future. |
