Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "This genus contains approximately 250 species of annuals, biennials, perennials and sub-shrubs, from a variety of habitats from well-drained mountainous sites to moist woodland in the northern hemisphere, particularly North America. The few shrubby species are mainly from South Africa. This species is a clump-forming, branching and multi-stemmed perennial from the eastern USA. It is erect, with slender, dark-green stems and mid-green, lance-shaped leaves, 8-10cm (3-4in) long. The overall effect is graceful and feathery. In early to mid-autumn, pale violet flowers with yellow centres are produced in airy panicles, up to 15cm (6in) wide, with flowers up to 2cm (0.75in) across, singly on the stems, but in profusion. Often, plants labelled as Aster turbinellus appear to differ from the plant in the wild and are probably hybrids of unknown origin. The hybrid is more colourful and more vigorous than the species, with bright violet-blue rays and a purple tinge to the stems. Grow in well-drained, open, moderately fertile, alkaline soil in full sun. Mulch annually, after cutting back in late autumn. Stake plants that grow to 75cm or taller in early spring. Asters are prone to eelworms, aphids, slugs, snails, fusarium wilt, leaf-soot and grey mould." from Royal Horticultural Society. "Easy to grow and disease-resistant this North American Michaelmas daisy has tall, graceful wiry stems which become covered in violet daisies for weeks in autumn. Despite its height, it never needs staking and apart from dividing up and replanting clumps every few years, it virtually looks after itself. his variety of the New England aster is just what you need to cheer you and your herbaceous border up in early autumn. Forming fine clumps of mid-green and slightly hairy foliage, the tops of its branched stems erupt into large white flowers from August to November. It thrives in any well drained and sunny position and divide old clumps every few years in spring." from Gardener's World. Available from Gardener's World in the UK with Digging Dog Nursery in America. |

Companions |
"Aster turbinellus is wiry and self supporting, and the blue-green foliage adds to the soft blue-grey haze. Flowers, which measure less than an inch across, tend to lower their petals slightly, adding even more grace to the border. Known as the prairie aster, it grows on drier soil in the more southerly states of North America. There it’s found in grassland, woodland clearings and edges, thinly wooded slopes, cliffs, rocky glades and roadsides. As a result, most gardeners can grow this drought-resistant aster even when they have failed with others. However, there are two forms commonly offered by nurseries. The correct form has blue-green foliage that clasps the stem in a sheath-like manner. Old Court Nurseries & The Picton Garden sells the right form. Other nurseries sell a darker-leaved hybrid. Plants that have an airy, delicate presence need a substantial partner and the dark stems and neatly crimped foliage of Sedum 'Purple Emperor’ are perfect. By July this sultry sedum is topped by starry, bright pink flowers long before the aster buds appear. The smooth foliage is wine red from the moment it leaves the ground in spring, whereas many others only colour up as summer wanes. The flowers of 'Purple Emperor’ (which are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other insects) gradually fade to chocolate brown. This sedum also tends not to divide and flop in the centre as the clumps mature, a trait of many. Finally, add a touch of opalescence with Penstemon 'Mother of Pearl’, arguably the penstemon with the longest flowering season of all. This vision of pale pink tubular bells, held on the usual 2ft-high spike, would be nothing without the prominent purple veining that extends along the length of the inner flower. These inky striations link the eye to the foliage of Sedum 'Purple Emperor’ and the outer pearly pink tube catches the soft cloud provided by Aster turbinellus. Alternatively, you could use the tender salvias 'Waverley’ (or the slightly taller 'Phyllis’ Fancy’) for a similar opalescent effect. " from The Telegraph. |

This section details what I consider as errors in design carried out by the staff at the RHS garden in Wisley:-
Mixing all the primary colours together for the flower colours used in many of the 71 parts of these Mixed Borders This mixture provides a foliage and flower foil against which these other permanent herbaceous perennials can provide new growth from the ground each year, with the different colours of foliage from juvenile to mature to dying off in the autumn and then an easy maintenance during the months of December-March for removing most of the growth above ground and replacing the plant supports to provide a neat bed in a series of large ground areas. The bedding plants - see Bedding Annual Plant Index and Un-labelled Bedding Annual Plant Index pages - provide the icing on the cake at different flowering time periods between May and November to enhance the overall flower colour scheme. The new bedding each year can provide opportunities to vary the look of these beds. It was disapointing that I did not see the flowers during 2013 of more than 25% of these Permanent Herbaceous Perennial Plants - possible reasons shown in Lost Flowers Page with 'Walkabout' Plants and 'Stateless' Plants Page. A table for each month - May, June, July, August, September, October, November - shows the flower photos for each of the 71 parts of the Mixed Borders split into Blue, Orange, Pink, Red, Unusual Colour, White, or Yellow for all the plants. Besides that, you can see from the table below that Red and Pink with Unusual Flower Colours seem to be predominant as flower colours and that these are spread throughout the beds.
I have added the BEDding (started January 2014 - completed March 2014) and then the OTHer Permanent Plants (started March 2014 - completed May 2014) to the table below to show the flower colour planting scheme of the Bedding and the Other Permanent Plants and then its combination.
If I had produced this planting design with its mixture of flower colours in almost every part - or maintained these beds in this way - in 2013, I would be deeply ashamed. As a nation of gardeners in Britain; the Royal Horticultural Society being at its pinnacle, with the tradition of excellence by our previous head gardeners and their staff during the Victorian era, I had thought that the staff at the RHS Garden at Wisley would not need a lecture.
Another Possible Solution for lack of coordinated Flower Colour Scheme If you want the garden to be restful to the eye, then you can provide a colour scheme using the harmony of adjacent colours. If you prefer to shock the visitor, then use the contrast of opposite colours, but I am not favourable of the above partial use of the harmony of triads as shown by the Colour Wheel Page of Garden Design.
Very Poor Plant Labelling After reviewing the situation that 102 plants were missing their identity when in flower in 2013 out of 348 (29.31% of the plants) in 768 square metres of Mixed Borders garden beds:-
