Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "Superb architectural perennial with huge heads of dark pink-purple flowers in late summer held above strong burgundy stems. Perfect for the back of a border, it is a magnet for butterflies, and the fluffy seedheads look good well into winter. Cut back and compost the stems after flowering. Remove unwanted seedlings as they appear." from Telegraph Garden Shop. "But right now at the end of September, this flower that I used to consider coarse and weedy has really come into its own. A sunny day last week and it was alive to Red Admiral butterflies and was entrancing despite its height and bulk. There was a trial of Eupatoriums at Wisley in 2005-6 which I happened to see and admired a number of cultivars which I thought really lightened up late summer and the RHS thought so too as there were five Awards of Garden Merit awarded then. The plain Atropurpureum Group plant has also an AGM but ‘Riesenschirm’ (Gigantic Umbrella in German as this is a plant bred in Germany) has really large fluffy pink heads and deep wine-red stems. If you don’t want it to grow too tall, don’t give it too fertile, sunny, damp soil as this is what it likes though it is normally considered an easy plant which is not too fussy. I have placed one plant in deep shade and it struggles but does flower very late which is a plus as anything that flowers in October extends the season of the garden. I do find that slugs and/or snails tend to chew off the shoots as they come through the soil but it has resulted in something of a ‘Chelsea Chop’ where it has bushed out and flowered more while most of it is only five to six feet tall. It is nor a plant for a miniature jewel box of a garden but is wonderful where it has space. And it looked much better with the butterflies, hoverflies and bees than the brown edged late Buddleja x weyeriana on the same day. I like the buddleja with its unusual orange (with a tiny admixture of lavender) flowers but like all buddlejas it doesn’t die well. There are other Eupatoriums that I covet but they have mostly had a recent name change; Eupatorium ligustrinum AGM that I first saw in Jane Sterndale-Bennett’s garden on the first HPS Autumn weekend in Winchester is now called Ageratina ligustrina and Eupatorium Rugosum ‘Chocolate’ AGM which did the rounds of the garden centres a few years ago is now Ageratina altissima ‘Chocolate’. These both have the wonderful fluffy white autumn flowers you might have expected from being in the genus Asteraceae but Chocolate has good dark leaves too. Sometimes I am rude about plants with deep purple foliage (too much Prunus cerasifera ‘Pissardii’ in my garden and street) but certain plants overcome my prejudice against too many lumps of purple in the garden. Foliage in the garden is indeed a lovely thing but the effects I strive for are not adjacent lumps of purple, yellow and green but the interplay of shape and texture as well as colour. However the dark cut-leaved elders are fantastic and who can deny the attractions of all the dark-leaved dahlias that are currently flowering their heads off in my friends’ gardens. Why don’t mine flower well apart from my forgetting to keep their tubers damp in my cellar over the winter? Probably the slugs and/or snails as well as not enough sun. If you want a Eupatorium and ‘Riesenschirm’ is too tall for your border, there is ‘Purple Bush’ which is a Piet Oudolf cultivar and only grows to around 4 feet in height (oh dear, surely I should be using metres not feet) ! And the already mentioned Ageratina ligustrina is generally three to five feet in height and shrubby." from Plant of the Month - October 2010 of Hardy Plant Society - "The Hardy Plant Society is a charity that was formed to foster interest in hardy herbaceous plants on the widest possible scale. It aims to give its members information about the wealth of both well and little known plants, and to ensure that all worthy plants remain in cultivation and have the widest possible distribution." Available from Telegraph Garden Shop in the UK. |

"With South African origins they are all sun lovers, but they would be used to summer rainfall so we suggest they will do better where they aren't too dry. Hence lots of organic matter in the soil to hold the moisture will pay dividends. It does sometimes take a while for an Agapanthus crown to flower well again, so expect better flowers in the second year. This form need planting in the sun 3-4" deep and about 12" apart." from Avon Bulbs. |
