Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' provides a vibrant mix of orange and sunshine-yellow daisies, tempered by warm-brown centres, from June until October. Every striped flower differs slightly in pattern and colour and appears to shimmer in the border, outshining other drabber heleniums. There are about 40 species of helenium in North and Central America. 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' is probably a hybrid of varieties bred from two of them, Helenium autumnale and Helenium bigelovii. The former is a tall plant (4ft-6ft/1.2m-1.8m), which grows widely, from Quebec to Florida and from British Columbia to Arizona, in damp places. It is known as common sneezeweed because the Cherokee Indians used to make the dried flowers into a herbal snuff as a cure for colds and catarrh. Helenium bigelovii is a shorter, deep-yellow species found growing in wet places on pine forest slopes from California to Oregon. Although many helenium varieties are the work of breeders such as Karl Foerster and Alan Bloom, spontaneous crosses do occur. 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' was found as a seedling in a bed containing a seed mixture called 'Autumn Leaves' at the Sahin trial grounds in Zeeland, Holland. The plant was selected in 1996 by the late Kees Sahin because of its long flowering season; it had begun in June and was still going on November 1, when it was given to Bob Brown of Cotswold Garden Flowers, who began to sell it the following year. Previously I had always struggled to grow classic varieties of helenium like 'Moerheim Beauty' (bred by Ruys in 1930) because I lived on the drier side of England. By the time it appeared in late July my garden was already too parched and the plant flagged horribly. I was also disappointed in the colour, described as crimson but more like a drab mahogany to me. Other varieties I tried were too tall and by the time the flowers came out the floppy stems had become ragged and brown. But 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' is a glorious colour, is self-supporting and has proved a vigorous performer, tolerant of my drier conditions. Even in extremely hot summers, when I have had to revive it with buckets of water on occasions, it has performed well. It is particularly stunning in autumn when the rich colours shine out in the clear, sharp light. It also charmed the RHS Floral Committee; 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' was awarded an AGM in the 1999-2001 trial despite being very new. The national collection-holder, Martin Hughes-Jones of Sampford Shrubs, also recommends H. 'Waltraut' (a copper-orange), H. 'Wyndley' (brown-streaked yellow) and two new German varieties, 'El Dorado' (a vigorous golden yellow) and 'Rauchtopas' (golden yellow with bright red undersides to the petals), for their garden-worthiness." from The Telegraph. 5 favourite Heleniums. Available from Avondale Nursery and Provender Nurseries in the UK with Plant Lust in America. |

Companions |
"The clear-red Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a good July partner and there are later, shorter crocosmias that flower until September. The stunning 'Walcroy' (sold as Walberton Yellow), the tomato-orange 'Carmin Brilliant', the brown-eyed orange 'Emily Mckenzie' and day-glo orange 'Lana de Savary' could all be placed in the forefront. The taller Crocosmia masoniorum, a burnished bronze-red that also flowers until September, would make a fine backdrop. Soft-orange dahlias such as 'David Howard' and 'Bishop of York', or the warm-red peony-flowered 'Bishop of Llandaff' could be used with golden hemerocallis, tall yellow solidago and smoky fennel (Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum'). Or use a fiery orange alstroemeria like 'Flaming Star'. Orange flowers also look absolutely dazzling against deep blue. The navy blue Aconitum 'Spark's Variety' will flower from July until late August in sunny places. Aconitum carmichaelii 'Barker's Variety' and 'Kelmscott' have softer-blue September flowers. Or place a pot of true-blue agapanthus or deep-blue salvias close by." from The Telegraph. |

"With South African origins they are all sun lovers, but they would be used to summer rainfall so we suggest they will do better where they aren't too dry. Hence lots of organic matter in the soil to hold the moisture will pay dividends. It does sometimes take a while for an Agapanthus crown to flower well again, so expect better flowers in the second year. This form need planting in the sun 3-4" deep and about 12" apart." from Avon Bulbs. |
