Plant Name |
Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus The name Hemerocallis comes from the Greek word hemera meaning day and kalos for beautiful. This refers to the fact that the beautiful flowers only last one day; luckily they are remontant, meaning they flower repeatedly throughout the season. The name lilioasphodelus comes from lilio meaning lily and asphodelus referring to its resemblance to an Asphodel flower. |

Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "This lovely yellow daylily is one of the first plants to really show its colours in the Mixed Borders in summer. You can spot it near the entrance to the Plant Centre, and in the borders its golden, starry flowers and green strappy leaves bring light and freshness and the promise of the summer to come. But come later in the day to see it – it’s a nocturnal flower, and it is especially suited to your garden if you sit out in the evening. It is a spreading rhizomatous perennial and is found in large clumps in China. Following its introduction around the 17th century it was one of the first day lilies used for breeding. It has narrow leaves 50-65cm (20-26in) long and produces star-shaped, bright lemon-yellow, fragrant flowers in early summer. These are up to 9cm (3.5in) across and are nocturnal, meaning that they don’t open until late afternoon, but will last for around 16 hours. This plant is ideal for use in a mixed or herbaceous border or planted in drifts for a wild garden. It is one of the few plants to cope well with a heavy clay soil." from Royal Horticultural Society. "The Greek term 'hemerocallis' means 'beautiful for a day', and daylilies need regular deadheading to prolong flowering and prevent their unsightly deadheads from dominating the scene. Each stem carries several flowers, so snap off each flower as it fades. When the stem has finished flowering, cut it down to the ground. After the plant has finished flowering altogether, pull out the dead leaves. When the foliage is looking tatty, cut it down to the ground and fresh new growth will appear. Lift and divide every three years in spring to keep the rhizomes vigorous and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Water frequently from spring until the buds appear." from Crocus . " Daylilies Hemerocallis - latin/greek translation - literally 'Day-beauty'. My own UK bred seedlings registered with the AHS have had extensive trialling and then only registered based on their performance in the UK making them suitable for most of Europe. The illustrations are my own and the depiction genuine using a camera that does not enhance the plant or flower and taken directly in the garden. My Daylily hybridisation programme is focused on 'Diploid's (two sets of chromosomes) rather than the 'Tetraploid's (four sets) which is generally more common. Colchicine (a toxic natural product from the 'Colchicum' (autumn crocus)) was used to develop the Tetraploids in the 1940s and this process is quite common in the plant industry with the desire to create a larger, hardier and faster growing plant. Diploid & Tetraploid plants can not be crossed. This in some way accounts for the variety in the Daylilies available. Generally, tetraploid daylilies have larger, thicker leaves, scapes and flowers but colour and vigour simply depends on the plant. For the same reasons I like other species plants, I admire the qualities of the Diploid's. It is a personal choice (and I hold many excellent tetraploid daylilies) but for me, I like the grace and movement within the dip's and this finer quality has led to the push toward the more extreme 'spider' and 'unusual form' varieties that I love. Further, breeders like 'Mahieu' have gone back to original species to re-harness hardiness, vigour and the lost scent. Perhaps he believed, like me that beauty lies in origin, not toxin. The Telegraph 13 April 2013 Just a quickie! Only there is a lovely article "Gorgeous gardens to visit on the Isle of Wight" by Jean Vernon. As well as the classics like Osborne House & Ventnor Botanic gardens it also talks about NGS gardens open this year and I am delighted to be included "White Cottage, Bembridge, is a secret garden awash with creativity, inspiration and magic" " from White Cottage Daylilies.

"With South African origins they are all sun lovers, but they would be used to summer rainfall so we suggest they will do better where they aren't too dry. Hence lots of organic matter in the soil to hold the moisture will pay dividends. It does sometimes take a while for an Agapanthus crown to flower well again, so expect better flowers in the second year. This form need planting in the sun 3-4" deep and about 12" apart." from Avon Bulbs. |
