Comment |
Erect Form. Pruning Group 14. "Persicaria can be annuals, herbaceous or evergreen perennials or sub-shrubs with simple leaves and small bell-shaped white or pink flowers in long-lasting spikes or panicles. 'Firetail' is an herbaceous perennial forming a clump to 1.2m in height, with large, prominently veined ovate leaves and small bright red flowers borne in dense, long-stalked spikes to 10cm in length in summer and early autumn. Grow in any moist soil in full sun or partial shade. Cut back after flowering." from Royal Horticultural Society. "Long, slender spikes clustered with tiny, fluffy, crimson-red flowers rise from mid summer to early autumn above semi-evergreen, lance-shaped, mid-green leaves. This clump-forming, vigorous perennial has handsome foliage and quickly makes dense groundcover in sun or partial shade. Plant it in bold swathes to add vertical interest in the border right through till mid autumn and give it plenty of space. Persicaria does not like dry soil, so performs best in a bog garden or beside a pond. Bees and other insects love it too! Lift and divide congested colonies in spring or autumn." from Crocus. "A 'BLOOMS OF BRESSINGHAM' selection that's robust, clump forming, semi-evergreen. Blooming from mid-summer to early autumn, it's one of the stars of our gardens. Long, thin spikes of rosey red flowers add an airy grace to the garden. This is just an astounding, amazing plant! It is one of the best plants we sell. Period!" from Lazy S'S Farm Nursery . Available from Crocus in the UK with Lazy S'S Farm Nursery in America. |

Companions |
"I was attracted to this plant because of its casualness and its long bloom period. It appears to be the sort of perennial best suited to a cottage garden. It is also ideal for a flowerbed with a meadow theme, as it looks stunning when combined with ornamental grasses. Firetail grows in sun and part shade, in normal, sandy, or clay soil providing the earth is moist. It attracts butterflies, and is deer and rabbit resistant. Due to its spreading habit, some might consider experimenting with it as ground cover." from Allan Becker - "Now he has turned his passion for gardening into a second career, as a designer, consultant, and garden coach, for clients in Montreal, Canada. In spring and summer, he supervises his assistants, mostly college students, who transform his designs into flower gardens. In winter, he lectures at garden clubs, researches new plants for the following season, writes articles to present to a Writers' Circle, reviews books on garden-related topics for <Bookpleasures.com> and writes a gardening blog <allanbecker-gardenguru.squarespace.com>." |

"With South African origins they are all sun lovers, but they would be used to summer rainfall so we suggest they will do better where they aren't too dry. Hence lots of organic matter in the soil to hold the moisture will pay dividends. It does sometimes take a while for an Agapanthus crown to flower well again, so expect better flowers in the second year. This form need planting in the sun 3-4" deep and about 12" apart." from Avon Bulbs. |
