Apprent-iceship places not being taken up

Barchester Healthcare 'dismayed' by lack of youths wanting care jobs.

Barchester Healthcare, the care home group, is "frustrated and dismayed" over the lack of young people wanting to join its apprenticeship scheme, leaving hundreds of paid jobs vacant at a time of high youth unemployment.

Article from The Telegraph reported in the 3 November 2012 edition of The Week:-

The company has had 450 youth apprenticeship places open since February but so far has only managed to recruit 72 under-25s onto the scheme, taking up fewer than a fifth of the available posts.

Elsewhere the company, which runs 240 care homes across the UK, is struggling to find young people willing to join its work placement programme, with almost 1,000 positions left unfilled.

Of the 960 placements available – each lasting up to six weeks with a strong chance of a paid job at the end of the scheme – only 50 young people have taken up the challenge.

The Government-backed programme, which offers 16 to 24 year-old unemployed benefits claimants quality work experience, is unpaid but jobseekers can continue claiming jobless benefits, giving them vital experience in the world of work.

Barchester agreed with Jobcentre Plus in February it would take on young people through the scheme but the service is failing to get young people interested, despite the youth unemployment rate reaching more than 20pc.

Terry Tucker, director of learning at Barchester Healthcare, told The Sunday Telegraph: "We've had so much bad luck. Some young people just don't seem keen on work. Many are not turning up or turning up late, some are swearing, they're just not interested. Jobcentre Plus is really embarrassed, they've rung us apologising.

"The ones that do turn up have been sent by the job centre and are just going through the motions or they won't get their benefits."

She added: "It is very frustrating to have apprenticeships available and not have them filled, particularly given the numbers out of work around the country."

Official apprenticeship figures last week showed an increase in the number of people starting the on-the-job training scheme over the past year, reaching 457,200, but only 45pc of the placements were going to under-25s.

Experts warned employers were training existing staff on adult apprenticeship schemes rather than creating new jobs for the young.

Ms Tucker said young people were generally unaware of the "rewarding" career path a job in the care industry can offer.

She conceded some of the jobs are mundane – such as laundry and housekeeping – but said young people could specialise in more creative roles like gardening or becoming a chef. Barchester Healthcare has a chef academy specifically to train young people in the art of cooking.

The company offers office-based apprenticeships too, training people in management and business, but one of its care homes in Chelsea, London, spent 18 months recruiting just one apprentice.

"I don't think young people know what good fun it is and how rewarding care is. Care is not seen as sexy and exciting but there are plenty of good jobs on offer."

Ms Tucker has raised the issue with the Government and is working with local schools to educate and inform young people about the industry.

A Department for Business spokesman said: "Social care is a rewarding career choice and we want to encourage more people to take up this profession.

"The National Apprenticeships Service is currently working with Barchester Healthcare to help them improve the volumes of apprentices and are using their online vacancy matching system to identify high calibre candidates.

"Jobcentre Plus advisers across the country are also working closely with Barchester Healthcare to ensure as many young people as possible get the opportunity to gain skills and experience in social care."

The Bookseller/Diagram Prize for Oddest Title of the Year, originally known as the Diagram Group Prize for the Oddest Title at the Frankfurt Book Fair, commonly known as the Diagram Prize for short, is a humorous literary award that is given annually to the book with the oddest title. The prize is named after the Diagram Group, an information and graphics company based in London, and The Bookseller, a British trade magazine for the publishing industry.

The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest (BLFC) is a tongue-in-cheek contest held annually and is sponsored by the English Department of San Jose State University in San Jose, California. Entrants are invited "to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels" – that is, deliberately bad.
The contest was started in 1982 by Professor Scott E. Rice of the English Department at San Jose State University and is named for English novelist and playwright Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, author of the much-quoted first line "It was a dark and stormy night". This opening, from the 1830 novel Paul Clifford, continues floridly:

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents, except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

The first year of the competition attracted just three entries, but it went public the next year, received media attention, and attracted 10,000 entries.

There are now several subcategories, such as detective fiction, romance novels, Western novels, and purple prose. Sentences that are notable but not quite bad enough to merit the Grand Prize or a category prize are awarded Dishonorable Mentions.

  • Create and input all plants known by Amateur Gardening inserted into their Sanders' Encyclopaedia from their edition published in 1960 (originally published by them in 1895) into these
    • Stage 1 - Garden Style Index Gallery,
      then

It is worth remembering that especially with roses that the colour of the petals of the flower may change - The following photos are of Rosa 'Lincolnshire Poacher' which I took on the same day in R.V. Roger's Nursery Field:-

There are 720 roses in the Rose Galleries; many of which have the above series of pictures in their respective Rose Description Page.

So one might avoid the disappointment that the 2 elephants had when their trunks were entwined instead of them each carrying their trunk using their own trunk, and your disappointment of buying a rose to discover that the colour you bought it for is only the case when it has its juvenile flowers; if you look at all the photos of the roses in the respective Rose Description Page!!!!
